starting a new thread for dealing with broken things, incomplete things, wants, wishes, hopes, dreams.

probably gonna talk to myself in here from time to time too.

if you see something, put it here.

if you want something, put it here.

if i dont say no, dont give up until i do it. i respond well to guilt SMILE

UPDATE: 12:30am 1-17-10 i may delete posts just to keep the thread tidy. i will try to quote you somewhere in the punchlist and give you proper credit for your ideas.

UPDATE: 11:11pm 1-19-10 moved the math discussions about average gain per trade to its own thread - FUN WITH MATH!

UPDATE: 5:15am 1-20-10 going back to the old system of one post for each page subject. the long post was impossible to edit.

front page-

top 5 players / top 5 groups: links need to point to the http host, not the server ip.
done. 5:47am 1-9-2010

it would be nice if the forum link titles (everywhere) had mouseover text.
done. 5:55am 1-9-2010

1-11-10 1:30am- had some functions to cache elements included in the front page code. moved those functions to an outside script. should help speed up page load times.

i think there was an idea awhile back about keeping the quarterly groups out of front page ranking...
done. 1-11-10 5:55am

1-10-10 4:33pm- added a bit of code to try and keep 'adult' sites off the front page transaction listings. it will take a few transactions to work its way in. UPDATE: only 'kinda' works. it takes awhile for alexa to flag them, and the turnover is fast... not sure about a real solution. gonna leave the patch in place to get what it can.

The winner photo still is linked to RockCrawler304's profile.

LOL really? thats hot. i fail. BIG GRIN

The winner photo is out of date (make him submit another one, dang winning guy..-PS what happened to him not kicking butt this season???)

i think spurtis has tried to mail me pics a couple times now...im terrible at checking email, and still havent found it. ive always felt like that area could be used for something better, but having your face all over the game you are kicking ass at is pretty cool too. if you guys have any suggestions, or opinions about that space, id love to hear em THUMBSUP!
UPDATE: got the picture changed awhile ago LOL

groups page-

should think about a way to rank groups based on members vs total assets.
done. 5am 1-12-10 aint nothin to it but to do it.

again with the layout... needs work.
UPDATE: 5am 1-12-10 been working on the layout here too.

Buford T. Justice said:
no scrollbars on top 25 or groups pages on iphone.

layout looks ok tho.

just did some reading about that... doesnt look like iphone will support scrollbars in divs with overflow:auto ...i will try to think of a decent workaround.

UPDATE: tried using overflow:scroll and learned more about iphone and scrollbars... the trick to scrolling is to hold one finger down on the area, and then slide another finger in the direction you want to scroll. its kinda awkward, but it seems to work...
still thinking about it. 11:35pm 1-16-10

what design? this one doesnt hurt my eyes like some of the others, but it does need some work.

i think the search features work.

cb123 said:
On the search page, can we add the ability to just search by price? Forget the need for a text string to search on? Sometimes it would be nice to just see all the 10,000+$ stocks, or all the .50c stocks... (Please! BIG GRIN )

forum / help-

its all kinda awkward... some things i really love tho.

UPDATE: 5am 1-20-10 integrating with domains pages forced me to do some major work in the forums today, things are noticeably faster from here, and a lot of backend clutter is easier to get to later. THUMBSUP!

watchlist-

needs some database work.
watches now stored by name and not by id. 5:30am 1-16-10

AllenGraves said:
How about a graph thumbnail next to each watched site on the watchlist page? Maybe you could mouseover and a larger (regular sized) image would pop up?

im gonna put a chart icon next to each domain, and then write some javascript to show the current graph when you mouseover it... that should be pretty cool i think.
done. 10:39pm 1-13-10

i need to add the checkmarks that show whether the price is current from the portfolios to the watchlists too.
done. 11:45pm 1-13-10

couldnt add to watchlist while the trade window was closed. didnt know. that was lame. fixed now.
done. 1:53am 1-14-10

Just noticed the new things in the watch list! Awesome job nick. I don't look at graphs too much unless it is a site I am not familiar with but that new feature makes it so much better now. TWO THUMBS UP!

some stuff is still kinda awkward up top, and down low.

the middle is ok tho (i think)...

should check the sorting again.
UPDATE: looks like there is a problem sorting by GAIN|LOSS

Is there anyway we can add a button to pull an update on all pricing information from alexa on our portfolio positions? It's not a big deal when you have 10 positions open, but when you have 150 open positions and you're trying to open each one to deal with it that's a serious pain..

nope. its a volume of queries issue...right click + t SMILE

i used to have a script running in the background that would update prices for owned domains after the trade window opened...i think it did like 20 every 15 minutes or something. i dont remember the specifics, but there was something that wasnt quite right about it.

maybe i can dig thru that sometime.

something weird with the history timestamps.
while im checking timestamps, i should look at the bottom of the user pages too.

done. 6:15am 1-9-10

UPDATE: something still funky with the timestamp on the url pages- i suspect the issue lies in the selling method.

a little funky at the bottom.

pagination delayed. 6:17am 1-11-10

something stupid with the sorting on that page too.
doesnt total by lifetime. players have no rank.

done. 6:19am 1-11-10

captchas-
Why is a captcha not needed for the first post in a new thread? Would that not help to reduce spam posted to the forums?
done. 5:15am 1-11-10

thinking about adding captcha to new user registration too. probably will soon.
done. 5:30am 1-16-10

Speaking of pains... Is there anyway that we could (for verified members..??) remove that cursed Captcha, once again, not a big deal if you're trading a stock or ten, but when it's hundreds that's no good at all, as it makes the game take too much time..

ive got mixed emotions here. i hate filling out captchas...

but then again... sometimes the only thing between you and the other person that wants that domain is a captcha...

im not against the idea (maybe after 1B lifetime earnings or something??)

but i think i wanna talk about it some more. SMILE

race to one:
dont think anyone has done it yet, still dunno if it works right.

crazy nick:
LOL, dont even know where to begin.

trade window:
need to tighten the screws some more.

UPDATE:made a change in the trade window system that will either win or fail.
if it works, arb will get a little harder THUMBSUP!

waiting for confirmation. 12:21am 1-14-10

looks like its working. waiting a couple more windows. 1:06am 1-14-10

added more screws, and some glue. ...things seem stable. 1-16-10

moderator tools
i need to add a 'delete post' feature to the moderation tools too.
done. 7:35am 1-11-10

need to work on the 'delete post' code, the last poster is a stored value... need to update it.
done. 12:17am 1-14-10

i need to add some javascript to throw up a confirmation prompt when you go to delete a post or a thread.
done. 1:28am 1-14-10

notes and alerts

cb123 said:
I would be very pleased if it were possible to add a note to stock that I currently own, much like the notes that are available in the watchlist already.

cb123 said:
Great question... I'm not sure, although I had a private note in mind at the time... Basically a way to note what the hell I was thinking when I bought the stock, or note the expected sell date...

For that matter, and this is starting to get into complete lagniappe, but is there any possible way we could setup "alerts", basically e-mailed messages reminding us to sell at a given date, or notify us that we have reached some pre-defined metric. (essentially, notify on given value or %gain..)

ok, private notes are the more difficult way to go in this system, so i agree. we should have those immediately. BIG GRIN

yes, ive thought about alerts too. could do it via twitter very easily, which would work well with my goal of getting everybody using it LOL...

email is doable too of course. ive been thinking about ways to integrate more social networking into this site, and was thinking about adding a spot for players to have links to their facebook and twitter accounts....

i also backburnered an idea awhile ago about letting users set pricepoints to buy or sell, kinda like a broker.

cb123 said:
If public notes are easy... Could we also add a public note field to each stock? Might be a fun way to share some tribal knowledge, or request that you might be allowed to buy a few from someone who has them, and I'm sure plenty of other uses would be found.

absolutely. i will create a 'domains' forum, and then every domain can potentially have its own thread... ill set it up to show the five most recent posts on the domain page if they exist, with a link to the forum thread, and if there are no posts it will show a 'post a message' link THUMBSUP!

i can probably get it handled tonight.

cb123 said:
Of course, that would also make me want a yes/no option on the search page to look only for stocks with notes.

im sure i can work something out for this. will be a little strange, but good to know before i start.

cb123 said:
Speaking of the search page... Another small idea, I notice you are sorting on price, high to low, is there any future potential of having a sort by option? Obviously it's easier to sort by numbers than letters, and I've noticed that the very best stocks usually have subsequently larger trading volumes... So at least an option to sort on the volume would be nice, the name is overall pretty unimportant when it comes to sorting..

yeah, two things i slack consistently on are sorting and pagination... not that either are difficult, just mundane. i liek teh excitement.

i will add sorting to the search page to-do list. THUMBSUP!

Trying to sell shares from my portfolio; I follow the link from the portfolio page for http://www.urlashare.com/url/portotem.net, when I get there it shows "shares available: 0", but there is no "Sell" button. The same thing for a few other domains that I looked at.

Selling by checking the check-box on the portfolio page and clicking on the "sell" button still works.

I'd like to sell 7 shares of http://www.urlashare.com/url/ups.info.ve, but I can't do that anymore, it's all or nothing at this point.

looking at this now.THUMBSDOWN!
done. ~1am 1-20-10

I just sold 377 shares of http://www.urlashare.com/url/ups.info.ve, with the intention of buying 370 back. After the sale, I scrolled to the bottom of the portfolio page, expecting to see the last transaction at the top of the transaction list. It wasn't, I had to scroll down to the bottom of today's transactions, so that I could see the link for the sale of ups.info.ve, and click the link to buy back 370 shares.

ok, i fixed the sorting in the domains transactions. i will fix the sorting in portfolios too.

doing this first, actually.

I would love to be able to speculate on stocks that aren't listed currently by Alexa.. Say a buy-in of .25-1.00 each? Don't really know if this would be of interest to anyone else, but I would like it...

My idea is a page that gives an option on a not-listed stock to buy a number of speculation shares... With a warning that you might lose 100% on this..

junk stocks... hm.

i will think about this more, there will be database issues for sure.

the maintenance i did earlier should probably be done weekly, i deleted 250,000 domains.

anything that wasnt owned and cost less than $10 was cleaned out (no big deal, they go back in when the url page gets requested)

but getting rid of em frequently keeps everything running a little faster.

ill ponder it, i like the idea at the idea level... THUMBSUP!
